Microsoft Develops the Xbox One Wearable
Fitness and gaming don’t exactly go hand in hand, but it seems that the Microsoft Corporation is attempting to marry the two with an Xbox One fitness band that is rumored to be released sometime next year. Of course, this brings up the question: will gamers be interested in using it? It would be wrong to imply everyone who plays games isn’t interested in fitness since that is a generalization, but it is also the popular consensus. Gaming has, for ages, been associated with couch potatoes.
So, for those who aren’t necessarily interested in getting up and going to the gym or hitting the running trails, this could be a helpful device.
Right now, the actual design of the wearable is simply conjecture, but it is expected to work with the Xbox One gaming system, which has numerous different health and fitness games and apps already available. Microsoft has been making a move toward physical fitness since the release of the Kinect, which tracks movement and allows players to interact directly with the screen. So, the gaming fitness monitor would be just one more step in the same direction.
The Kinect can ensure the gamer is doing the right exercise and fitness moves, but it cannot track heart rate or calories burned. This is where the Microsoft wearable would come into play.
Although it hasn’t been announced yet, there is a good chance that the fitness band will only work with the Xbox One, not with earlier generations such as the Xbox 360 and not as a standalone fitness monitor. For that reason, the wearable could be limited for anyone who actually does want to work out in different ways. In other words, the fitness band will appeal to gamers alone instead of the general population, in all likelihood.
If you are interested in getting fit, then choosing a standalone monitor would be the best option. However, if your fitness routine could be improved by using Xbox video games to help you stay motivated, then this rumored band by Microsoft could be ideal for you. At this time, there is no word on when the monitor will be released, but the company does indicate that an array of different pieces of technology will hit the market in 2015, so this is when the band is expected to be available to the general public. Gaming and fitness may actually go hand in hand, to some extent, in the coming days.
